Key takeaways

  • Allow OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in your firewall or CDN bot settings.
  • Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  • Answer customer questions clearly in text and keep business details identical across your site and listings.
  • Genuine reviews and real third-party mentions matter; no platform sells or guarantees a place in its answers.
  • Track with Search Console, chatgpt.com referrals in GA4 and a monthly log of test prompts.

To get your business mentioned in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, let their search crawlers reach your site, make sure your pages are indexed, answer common questions clearly in plain text, keep your business details identical everywhere, and earn genuine reviews and mentions on other trusted sites. None of these platforms sells or guarantees a place in its answers.

The good news is that the work overlaps heavily with ordinary search engine optimisation. Google says so directly in its own guidance, and the crawler documentation from OpenAI and Perplexity points to the same basics: be reachable, be indexable and be useful.

How do ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity choose their sources?

Each platform works a little differently, but all three start with a crawler that has to be allowed onto your site. If that crawler is blocked, nothing else on this list will help.

ChatGPT search

OpenAI’s publisher FAQ states that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. The crawler that matters is OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI’s bot documentation says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, although they may still appear as plain navigational links.

OpenAI runs a separate crawler, GPTBot, for collecting training data for its models. The two settings are independent, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI also says ChatGPT may learn about a page’s URL from third-party search providers, which is one more reason to keep your site well indexed across search engines, not only Google.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google’s documentation on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. That is the same bar as a normal search result.

Google describes a “query fan-out” technique, where the system runs several related searches on subtopics and pulls in supporting pages while it builds the response. This is why a page that answers one specific part of a question well can be cited, even if it does not rank first for the main query. Google’s AI optimisation guide, last updated in July 2026, adds that these features rely on the same core ranking and quality systems as regular Search.

Perplexity

Perplexity documents two agents. PerplexityBot crawls and indexes sites so they can be surfaced and linked in Perplexity’s results, and Perplexity says it is not used to train foundation models. Perplexity-User visits pages in real time when a person asks a question, and may link to that page in the answer.

Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and, if you use a web application firewall, allowing its published IP ranges as well. Firewalls and bot protection settings on hosting or CDN services are a common, silent reason a site never appears.

Platform Crawler to allow Basic requirement How to see results
ChatGPT search OAI-SearchBot Public page, crawler not blocked Referrals tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Googlebot Indexed and eligible for a snippet Search Console performance reports
Perplexity PerplexityBot (and its IP ranges) Crawler and firewall allow access Referral traffic from perplexity.ai in analytics

How to get your business mentioned in AI answers: step by step

  1. Check your robots.txt and firewall. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for any “Disallow” rules aimed at OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot. Then check bot protection settings at your host or CDN, since some block AI crawlers by default. OpenAI and Perplexity both say robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.
  2. Confirm your key pages are indexed. Verify your site in Google Search Console, submit your XML sitemap and use the URL Inspection tool on your service, product and location pages. Submitting the same sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools is a sensible extra step, given that OpenAI says ChatGPT can find URLs through third-party search providers.
  3. Put the answer near the top of each page. Start important pages with a short, direct answer to the question a customer would ask, then add detail under clear headings. Use tables for prices, specifications and comparisons. Keep this information as real text, not inside images or PDFs, which Google lists as a basic good practice.
  4. Write for people, not for the AI. Google’s AI optimisation guide says you do not need to break content into tiny chunks or write in a special style for generative AI. It asks for original, expert content that goes beyond common knowledge. A plumber explaining real repair costs in their own city will be more useful than a generic article copied from elsewhere.
  5. Keep your business details consistent. Your business name, address, service areas, opening hours and main services should match on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directory listings. AI systems combine information from many sources, and conflicting details make it harder for them to describe you with confidence.
  6. Use structured data that matches the page. Schema.org types such as Organization, LocalBusiness and Product can help Google understand your pages and qualify for rich results. Google is clear that schema is not required for AI features and that any structured data must match the visible text on the page.
  7. Keep Google Business Profile and Merchant Center up to date. Google’s guidance names both as ways to make local businesses and products visible in its AI features. Reply to reviews, add current photos and correct any wrong hours or categories.
  8. Earn genuine reviews. Ask real customers to review you on Google and on the platforms that matter in your sector, such as Trustpilot, Clutch, Practo or TripAdvisor. Do not buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones, which breaks most platforms’ rules.
  9. Get mentioned on trusted third-party sites. AI answers to questions such as “best accounting firm in Pune” or “top Shopify agencies in London” often cite lists, trade press and comparison articles. Work on real coverage: industry association listings, interviews with trade publications, guest articles, podcast appearances and supplier or partner pages. Google’s guide specifically lists seeking inauthentic mentions as something to avoid.
  10. Keep pages current. Update prices, team details, service lists and dates when they change. Out-of-date facts on your own site can end up repeated in AI answers.

If your website runs on a slow or script-heavy setup, technical fixes may come first. Pages that only show content after heavy JavaScript loads can be harder for crawlers to read, and Google’s guide asks site owners to follow its JavaScript SEO practices. A well-built website with clean HTML makes every step above easier.

What you can skip

A lot of paid advice in this area is not supported by what the platforms themselves publish. Based on the official documentation at the time of writing (October 2026), you can safely deprioritise the following:

  • llms.txt for Google. Google’s AI optimisation guide says Google Search does not use llms.txt files. Creating one is optional.
  • Rewriting every page for AI. Google says you do not need to write in a specific way for generative AI search, or chase long-tail keyword variations.
  • Mass-produced pages. Publishing hundreds of near-identical pages for each query variation can breach Google’s scaled content abuse policy.
  • Tools promising guaranteed AI rankings. Google warns against third-party tools that claim access to its internal ranking or AI systems.

How to track whether AI tools mention your business

Tracking is still patchy, so use several signals together rather than relying on any single tool.

  1. Search Console. Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode within the Performance report under the “Web” search type. In June 2026 Google announced separate generative AI performance reports in Search Console showing impressions, initially for a subset of sites.
  2. Analytics referrals. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. In Google Analytics 4, check Traffic acquisition and filter by session source for chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
  3. A monthly prompt log. Write 20 to 30 questions your customers actually ask, such as “best eyewear brand for wide faces in India” or “SEO agency for ecommerce in Manchester”. Each month, run them in ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity, and record in a spreadsheet whether you are mentioned, whether you are linked and which competitors appear.
  4. Server logs. Ask your developer or host to check access logs for visits from OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. If these bots never visit, there is an access problem to fix before anything else.

Results in AI answers can change from one query to the next, even for the same question. Look for a trend across months rather than reacting to a single answer.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

There is no published timeline. The access changes are quick: OpenAI and Perplexity say robots.txt changes take around 24 hours to apply, and Google says recrawling can take anywhere from days to months. The slower part is building reviews and third-party mentions, which usually takes months of steady work.

Because the foundations are the same as good search engine optimisation, work done here also supports your normal Google rankings. If you want a second pair of eyes on where your site stands, Squarebase offers a free growth audit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to get my business mentioned in ChatGPT answers?

No. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ describes no way to buy or guarantee a citation in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI does run a separate crawler that checks landing pages for ads in ChatGPT, but advertising is a different product from the cited sources in an answer.

Will blocking GPTBot stop my site from appearing in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI treats GPTBot (model training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate settings. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot so that your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers.

Do I need schema markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says structured data is not required for its generative AI features and there is no special markup to add. Schema can still help with rich results, as long as it matches the visible content.

How do I know if ChatGPT is sending traffic to my website?

Look for sessions with the source chatgpt.com in Google Analytics 4. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, which makes this traffic easy to separate from other sources.

Why does my competitor appear in AI answers but my business does not?

Common reasons are blocked crawlers, pages that are not indexed, thin or generic content, inconsistent business details and fewer reviews or third-party mentions. Work through the access and indexing checks first, as they are the quickest to fix.
