SEO vs AEO vs GEO: Differences and How to Plan in 2026
SEO, AEO and GEO explained in plain terms, with a comparison table covering goals, surfaces, inputs and metrics, plus a practical plan and checklist for covering all three in 2026.
Quick answer: SEO gets your pages ranked in search results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) gets your content chosen as the direct answer, such as a featured snippet or voice reply. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) gets your brand cited inside AI-written answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. In 2026 you need one plan that covers all three.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO is one of the most common questions marketing teams ask us this year. The three terms overlap, vendors use them loosely, and budgets get split in ways that do not match how search actually works.
This guide defines each term, shows where they differ in a comparison table, and gives a practical way to plan for all three without running three separate programmes.
Key takeaways
- SEO, AEO and GEO are layers of one discipline, not competing strategies. GEO depends on SEO foundations.
- SEO measures rankings and clicks. AEO measures how often you own the direct answer. GEO measures mentions and citations in AI answers.
- Google says no special optimisation is needed for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond standard SEO best practices.
- The same content habits serve all three: clear answers, question-style headings, verifiable facts, tables and structured data.
- Off-site reputation matters more for GEO because AI assistants summarise what many sources say about you.
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimisation is the work of making a website crawlable, indexable and relevant enough to rank in search engines such as Google and Bing. It covers technical health, content, internal linking, page experience and links from other sites.
The output is a ranked result that a person clicks. The core metrics are impressions, rankings, clicks, organic sessions and conversions. Google’s own guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content remains the reference point for content quality, including its emphasis on experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimisation focuses on being the single answer a system returns, rather than one of ten links. The term grew with featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice assistants that read out one answer.
AEO tactics include short definition paragraphs, step lists, question-style headings and FAQ sections. You cannot force it, though. Google’s featured snippets documentation states plainly that you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet: Google’s systems decide whether a page makes a good one.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimisation targets AI systems that write an answer from several sources and cite some of them. The term was introduced in the research paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, presented at KDD 2024. Its authors found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources improved visibility in generated answers by up to 40% in their tests, while keyword stuffing did not help.
GEO covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Each retrieves web content in its own way, so crawler access and off-site reputation become part of the job.
How do SEO, AEO and GEO differ?
| Factor | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer | Be mentioned or cited in AI-generated answers |
| Main surfaces | Google and Bing organic results | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot |
| Unit of success | A ranked URL | An extracted passage | A brand mention or source link inside a written answer |
| Key inputs | Technical health, content, links, page experience | Concise answers, lists, question headings, FAQs | Attributable facts, sources, structure, crawler access, brand consensus across the web |
| Main metrics | Rankings, clicks, organic conversions | Snippet ownership, answer share | Citations, mentions, AI referral traffic |
| Measurement tools | Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4 | Rank trackers with SERP feature data | Bing AI Performance report, utm_source=chatgpt.com in GA4, prompt tracking |
| Off-site role | Backlinks | Limited | High: reviews, press, directories, forums |
Why do the lines blur in 2026?
Google has merged the experiences. At Google I/O on 20 May 2026, Google said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users and that it was bringing AI Overviews and AI Mode into one AI Search experience, live worldwide on desktop and mobile. A single results page can now hold organic links, an AI answer with citations and a follow-up conversation.
Google also says, in its guidance on AI features, that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that the same SEO best practices apply. Microsoft gave similar advice in its October 2025 guide to AI search answers: clear headings, Q&A formats, tables, schema and content that is not hidden in tabs.
In practice, a page that is strong for SEO and written answer-first is already doing most of the AEO and GEO work. The extra GEO effort sits mostly off your site and in measurement.
How should you plan for all three?
Start with the SEO foundation
If Google and Bing cannot crawl, index and rank your pages, AI systems that retrieve from those indexes will struggle to find you. Fix technical issues, site architecture and internal links first.
Write every key page answer-first
Open with a short, self-contained answer, then expand. Use H2s phrased as questions, step lists for processes and tables for comparisons. This serves featured snippets and AI extraction at once.
Make your facts quotable
Add specific numbers with dates, named sources and links to original data. Show author names and update dates. AI systems are more likely to use a passage that contains a clear, attributable claim.
Open the right doors for AI crawlers
Allow search crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Decide on training crawlers such as GPTBot and Google-Extended separately. Check CDN and firewall rules too.
Build consensus off-site
AI assistants answer “best” and “vs” questions by summarising many sources. Earn coverage in credible publications, keep directory and marketplace listings accurate, and collect genuine reviews.
Measure each layer separately
Track rankings and clicks in Search Console, snippet ownership in your rank tracker, and AI visibility through Bing Webmaster Tools, a fixed prompt list and ChatGPT referrals, which OpenAI says carry utm_source=chatgpt.com according to its publishers FAQ.
Checklist: one page, three layers
Run this check on each priority page before you publish or refresh it:
- The page is indexable, loads fast and is linked from relevant pages on your site.
- The title and H1 match one clear search intent.
- A 40 to 70 word answer appears near the top.
- H2s are phrased as real buyer questions.
- Processes use numbered steps and comparisons use an HTML table.
- Every statistic has a date and a linked source.
- Author, publish date and last updated date are visible.
- Structured data (Article, Product, Organization, FAQ where relevant) matches visible text.
- No key information is locked in images, PDFs, tabs or accordions.
- The brand facts on the page match your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and marketplace listings.
How should budgets be split?
There is no standard ratio, and anyone quoting one is guessing. A useful rule is to fund in order of dependency. Technical SEO and core content come first, because nothing else works without them. Answer-first formatting is usually low cost once templates are set. GEO-specific spend goes mainly to digital PR, review programmes and measurement.
For a D2C brand, product and category pages, buying guides and comparison content tend to matter most. For a B2B firm, service pages, case studies with numbers and expert articles usually carry the load.
What does this look like for one query?
Take a buyer searching “are blue light glasses worth it”. Here is how each layer applies to a D2C eyewear brand.
- SEO: a buying guide on the brand’s site, indexed, fast on mobile, linked from the relevant collection page and ranking on page one for the query and close variants.
- AEO: the guide opens with a two to three sentence answer, followed by a short list of who benefits and who does not. This is the passage most likely to be lifted into a featured snippet or read out by a voice assistant.
- GEO: the guide cites published research with dates, states the brand’s own lens specifications in a table, and names an optometrist reviewer. Off-site, the brand appears in independent reviews and comparison articles, so an AI assistant writing about the topic finds consistent information from several sources.
The page is the same in all three cases. What changes is how you check whether it is working.
A note on terminology. Some agencies use AEO and GEO interchangeably, and others add terms such as LLMO or AIO. The labels matter less than the work: crawlable pages, clear answers, verifiable facts, strong reputation and honest measurement.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in search results. AEO aims to make your content the direct answer, such as a featured snippet or voice reply. GEO aims to get your brand mentioned or cited inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
Is GEO replacing SEO in 2026?
No. Most AI assistants retrieve pages from web indexes before writing an answer, so pages that are not crawlable or well ranked are rarely cited. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. GEO extends SEO rather than replacing it.
Can I choose which content becomes a featured snippet?
No. Google’s documentation says you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Its systems decide whether a page makes a good one. You can improve your chances with concise answers and clear structure, and you can opt out using the nosnippet or max-snippet rules.
How do I measure GEO performance?
Use the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools for Copilot and Bing AI citations, segment ChatGPT referrals in GA4 using utm_source=chatgpt.com, review Google Search Console, and track a fixed list of buyer prompts each month to record brand mentions and citations.
Do I need separate content for SEO, AEO and GEO?
Usually not. One well-structured page can serve all three if it answers the question early, uses question-style headings, includes tables and lists, cites dated sources and has accurate structured data. Separate effort is mainly needed off-site for GEO, through PR, reviews and listings.
