Key takeaways

  • Only verified profiles show on Google Maps and Search, so check for a Get verified button first.
  • Suspended profiles stay hidden until you fix the guideline issue and submit one appeal with matching documents.
  • Edits can take up to three days to appear, and new businesses up to a month.
  • Local ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence, and Google says you cannot pay to rank higher.
  • Use one specific primary category and keep your name free of extra keywords.

If your Google Business Profile is not showing up on Google Maps or Search, the most common reasons are that it is not verified, it has been suspended for a guideline issue, recent edits are still under review, or it simply ranks low for that search. Start by signing in to the managing account and checking its status.

Google’s own help centre lists these causes, and each has a clear fix. The steps below follow Google’s official guidance, checked on 13 October 2026, and are arranged in the order that usually finds the problem fastest.

First, check whether the profile is really missing

Many owners think their profile has vanished when it is only ranking lower for a broad search. Before changing anything, run these checks.

  1. Sign in to the Google Account that owns or manages the profile.
  2. Search Google for your exact business name plus your city, or search for “my business” to open the management panel.
  3. On Google Maps, search for the business name and city. In the Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right. If you manage more than one profile, use the arrow at the top to switch.
  4. Look for a status message on the profile, such as “Get verified”, a suspension notice or “Review issues”.

If the profile appears for its name but not for a search like “plumber near me”, the problem is ranking, not visibility. That is covered further down.

1. The profile is not verified

Google states that only verified businesses can show their information on Maps and Search. If you see a “Get verified” button, verification has not finished, or Google could not complete it.

Google decides which verification methods you are offered, and you cannot change them. Depending on the business, options can include a phone call or text, email, a live video call, a recorded video, a postcard or instant verification through Google Search Console.

How to fix it:

  1. Open your profile and select Get verified.
  2. Choose a method from the list. Google recommends video recording where your business is eligible.
  3. For a video, show your signage or street, proof that you manage the business (such as tools, stock, a till or keys to the premises) and avoid showing sensitive documents.
  4. For a postcard, confirm the address first. Most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. Do not edit your name, address or category while waiting, and do not request a second code, as that cancels the first.
  5. After you submit, wait. Google says reviews take up to 5 business days, sometimes longer.

If “Get verified” appears again after you finished, Google could not confirm the business. Try again or pick another method if one is offered.

2. The profile is suspended or disabled

Google hides profiles that break its guidelines until the issue is fixed. You should receive a notice in the Google Account that manages the profile, and the notice links to the policy concerned.

Common triggers, based on Google’s guidelines for representing your business, include:

  • Adding keywords, locations, taglines or phone numbers to the business name
  • Using a virtual office or rented mailing address where you do not actually work
  • Using a PO box as the address
  • A service-area business showing a home address that customers cannot visit
  • Creating more than one profile for the same location

How to fix it:

  1. Read the notice and correct the problem first. An appeal will not succeed while the violation remains.
  2. If your whole Google Account is restricted, appeal that first on the account restrictions page.
  3. Open the Google Business Profile appeals tool, sign in with the account linked to the profile and select the decision you want to appeal.
  4. Upload evidence. Google lists business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills in the business name as examples. The name and address on each document should match the profile exactly.
  5. Submit once. Google states that appeals can only be submitted once, and it emails you the decision.

Do not create a new profile for the same business while the old one is suspended. Google warns against this, and it can make the situation worse. If an appeal is refused, you can ask for another review only with new evidence.

3. Recent edits or a new listing have not appeared yet

Changes take time. Google says edits to business information can take up to three days to show, and a new business can take up to a month to start appearing in search results.

How to fix it: wait for that period before making more changes. Repeated edits to the name, address or category can trigger fresh reviews and further delays, so make one clean set of changes and leave it.

4. Your information is incomplete or wrong

Local results depend on accurate details. A wrong pin, an outdated address or missing hours can stop a profile showing for the people you want to reach.

How to fix it:

  1. Check the business name matches your signage and website, with no extra words.
  2. Confirm the address is your real location. Put the street address in line 1 and any suite or unit number in line 2. If Google cannot find the address, drag the pin to the right spot on the map.
  3. If you visit customers rather than receiving them, set a service area and hide your address.
  4. Add regular opening hours and use special hours for holidays.
  5. Add your website, phone number, attributes and photos.

5. Wrong or too many categories

Categories tell Google what searches your profile is relevant for. If your primary category is too broad or wrong, you may not appear for the searches that matter.

Google’s guidelines say to use as few categories as possible and to choose the most specific one for your main business. A useful test from Google is that the category should complete the sentence “This business is a”, not “This business has a”. For example, a shop that sells eyewear and offers eye tests would pick its core activity as the primary category, not every service it offers.

How to fix it: pick one specific primary category, add only a few secondary ones that describe what the business is, and remove categories used as keywords.

6. It ranks low because of distance, relevance or prominence

If the profile is verified and active but missing from searches such as “dentist near me”, it is likely a ranking issue. Google explains that local results are based mainly on three factors:

Factor What Google looks at What you can do
Relevance How well the profile matches the search Complete every field, choose accurate categories, describe your services clearly
Distance How far the business is from the searcher or the location in the search Nothing directly, but a correct address and pin make sure you are counted
Prominence How well known the business is, including links, reviews and ratings Ask happy customers for reviews, reply to reviews, earn local press and links

Proximity is the factor owners find hardest to accept. A business 5 kilometres from the searcher may not show for a “near me” search, even with a strong profile, because closer options exist. That is normal, not a fault.

Google also states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Paid ads on Maps are a separate product and do not change organic positions. If you need visibility beyond your immediate area, performance marketing through Google Ads can fill the gap while your organic profile grows.

A well-built website with consistent name, address and phone details also supports local visibility. Our search engine optimisation page covers how local and website SEO work together.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps after verification?

Recent edits can take up to three days to appear, and a new business can take up to a month to rank. If it still does not show, check for a suspension notice and confirm your address and pin are correct.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Google says reviews take up to 5 business days after you complete the verification steps, and sometimes longer. Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days.

How do I get a suspended Google Business Profile back?

Fix the guideline issue, then submit one appeal through the Google Business Profile appeals tool with documents such as business registration or utility bills that match the profile’s name and address.

Why does my business show when I search its name but not for “near me” searches?

That is a ranking issue. Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence, so closer or better-reviewed businesses may appear first. Improve your categories, details and reviews.

Can I pay Google to show my business higher on Maps?

No. Google states there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Google Ads can place a paid listing on Maps, but it does not change organic results.
